Rule one: solve without guessing
Every properly made sudoku has exactly one solution, reachable by logic alone. That means every guess is a skipped lesson: somewhere on that board there was a deduction available, and you didn't find it. Guess your way through a hundred puzzles and you'll have practiced guessing a hundred times — while your deduction skills stay exactly where they were.
Guessing is especially seductive in apps with a mistake counter, because the app grades every entry instantly. Stuck between two candidates? Type one; if the counter doesn't move, it was right. That's not solving — it's a coin flip with feedback. If you've been playing that way, the single biggest improvement available to you is to stop: place a digit only when you can say, out loud, why it must be there.
"But I was completely stuck" almost always means one of two things: your pencil marks were incomplete (so the deduction was invisible), or the puzzle required a technique you haven't learned yet. Both are fixable — and both are covered below. Neither is fixed by guessing.
Pencil-mark discipline: notes that work for you
Pencil marks (candidates) are not a crutch — they're the working memory that advanced techniques run on. Patterns like naked pairs and X-Wings are patterns in the candidates; if the candidates aren't written down, the patterns don't exist for you. The trick is discipline:
- On easy puzzles, don't use them at all. Easy grids are scanning practice; marks just slow you down.
- From medium up, mark systematically, not sporadically. Half-maintained notes are worse than none, because a missing candidate makes you "deduce" wrong conclusions with full confidence.
- Update immediately after every placement. Each digit you place should erase that candidate from its row, column and box. Do the sweep immediately, every time — stale pencil marks are worse than none, because you trust them.
- Read your marks, don't just write them. A cell with two candidates is a naked pair waiting to happen; three cells in a box sharing the same three candidates are a triple. The notes are where the solving happens.
Scanning: make the easy digits automatic
Strong solvers don't stare at grids; they scan them in fixed patterns. Two habits cover most of it:
Cross-hatching: pick a digit that appears often on the board — say there are six 5s placed. For each box that lacks a 5, the existing 5s eliminate rows and columns through that box; often only one cell remains. Sweep digit by digit, 1 through 9, and you'll harvest every hidden single on the board in a couple of minutes.
Counting units: any row, column or box with six or more digits placed deserves a quick count — with only two or three cells left, one of them is frequently forced. Rows and columns that cross nearly full boxes are the richest hunting grounds.
The point of drilling these isn't the easy digits themselves — it's that making them automatic frees your attention for the hard part of the puzzle. A solver who spends conscious effort finding singles has nothing left for spotting an X-Wing.
No, sudoku is not a math game
Worth killing this myth, because it stops people from improving — or starting. Sudoku uses digits as symbols, nothing more. There's no arithmetic anywhere in a classic grid: the puzzle would work identically with nine letters, nine colors or nine animals. What sudoku actually exercises is constraint logic — "if this, then that; if both, then this cell can't be a 7." Being "bad at math" is irrelevant.
The one place numbers genuinely matter is Killer Sudoku, where cages have sums — and even there, the arithmetic is single-digit addition; the difficulty is still in the logic of which combinations fit. If you can make change for a ten, you have all the math sudoku will ever ask of you.
When to move up a difficulty
Improvement happens at the edge of your ability — the level where you stall sometimes, but not constantly. Two signals tell you it's time to move up:
Your times have flattened. If your statistics show the same solve time for weeks at a level, the puzzles have stopped teaching you. Comfortable is the enemy here.
You never get stuck. Getting stuck is the productive moment: it means the puzzle demands a technique you don't yet own. A level that never produces that moment is maintenance, not practice.
When you do move up, expect the first several puzzles to feel like a wall — that's normal, and it's precisely where a hint used well pays off: when you're genuinely stuck, ask for one, then reverse-engineer it. Don't just accept the digit; work out what pattern justified it. One understood hint teaches more than ten finished easy puzzles.
